How do I check if a company is on Peppol?

Enter the company's enterprise number in our Peppol check. It asks the live Peppol register whether the company is registered and whether it accepts invoices. If the company isn't on it, you may send the invoice another way, but the company must put things right itself.

Since 1 January 2026, VAT-registered businesses in Belgium have been sending each other structured e-invoices through Peppol. So before you send an invoice, you want to know whether your customer can receive it.

What do I need?

Only the company’s enterprise number. In Belgium, every business is registered on Peppol under at least its enterprise number, with the scheme code 0208. So you don’t need to ask your customer for a separate Peppol ID.

What does the Peppol check look at?

Our check looks in the Peppol register live, just as Peppol software does before it sends an invoice. We check every Peppol ID that can be made from the number (the enterprise number and the VAT number), ask the company’s service provider which documents it accepts, and look up the name in the public Peppol Directory.

The government itself points to the Peppol Directory as the place to see which customers and suppliers are ready to receive structured e-invoices. A business registered on Peppol is saying that it accepts e-invoices.

What if the company isn’t on it?

  • Your customer isn’t ready: you may then send the invoice another way, on paper or electronically, for example as a PDF. Electronically is only allowed if your customer agrees. This way you meet your invoicing obligation. Your customer must still put things right without delay.
  • Your supplier isn’t ready: in principle, you may refuse the invoice. You keep your right to deduct VAT on an invoice issued another way.

Once your customer is ready, you don’t need to resend old invoices as e-invoices. Is your customer unsure how to register? Send them our guide Registering on Peppol.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to ask my customer for their Peppol ID?
No. Every Belgian business is registered under at least its enterprise number, with code 0208. So the enterprise number is enough.
What if my customer isn't on Peppol?
If your customer can't technically receive e-invoices yet, you may send the invoice another way, on paper or electronically (for example as a PDF, if the customer agrees). Your customer must still put things right without delay and risks a penalty.
Can I refuse an invoice from a supplier that isn't on Peppol?
In principle, yes, but in business that isn't always straightforward. You keep your right to deduct VAT on an invoice issued another way. The supplier risks a penalty.
Does a registration mean the company can also send?
Not necessarily. The Peppol register shows who can receive. Whether a company also sends isn't recorded there.
