I only work for private customers. Do I need to send e-invoices?

The obligation doesn't apply to your invoices to private customers. But if you have an active VAT number and buy from Belgian businesses, you do need to be able to receive e-invoices from your suppliers.

Many small sole traders work mainly for private customers: a hairdresser, a plumber, a coach. Do they need to send e-invoices? The answer has two sides.

Your invoices to private customers: no obligation

The e-invoicing obligation applies between Belgian VAT-registered businesses. It doesn’t apply to invoices to private customers. A PDF or paper invoice remains valid there.

Your incoming invoices: you do need to receive them

If you have an active VAT number and buy from Belgian businesses, for example materials or software, those suppliers have to send you e-invoices. So you need to be able to receive them. The official website says so explicitly: if you only invoice private customers but buy from a Belgian business, the obligation does apply to you.

Only businesses that don’t issue any invoice to, or receive any invoice from, Belgian VAT-registered businesses fall outside it.

Not sure? Answer the questions below; every answer points to the official source.

How do you get started?
